Finland

What can I expect from Finland?

Finland is a breathtaking destination known for its stunning natural landscapes, vibrant Nordic culture, and unique experiences like the Northern Lights and midnight sun. Helsinki, the capital, blends modern design with rich history, while Lapland offers a true winter wonderland, complete with reindeer, husky sledding, and Santa Claus Village. Whether you’re relaxing in a lakeside sauna, exploring the pristine national parks, or enjoying a cozy coffee break (fika) with a cinnamon bun, Finland is a country that embraces nature, tranquility, and adventure.

How to Get There

From the US, direct flights to Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL) are available from major cities like New York and Chicago with airlines such as Finnair, American Airlines, and Lufthansa (with layovers in Europe). Finland also has excellent rail and ferry connections from neighboring countries like Sweden, Estonia, and Russia.

Currency

The local currency is the Euro (EUR). Credit cards are widely accepted, even in small towns. However, it’s always good to carry a bit of cash for rural areas. 1 US dollar is approximately equivalent to 0.90 EUR.

Language

Finnish and Swedish are the official languages, but English is widely spoken, especially in Helsinki and major tourist areas. Learning a few Finnish phrases like “Moi” (Hello) or “Kiitos” (Thank you) can enhance your experience!

Credit Cards & ATMs

Most restaurants, hotels, and shops accept credit cards, and contactless payment is common. ATMs are widely available throughout the country.

Plugs

Finland uses Type C and Type F plugs, with a standard voltage of 230V and a frequency of 50Hz. Travelers from the US and UK may need a universal adapter.

Safety

Finland is one of the safest countries in the world, with low crime rates and a high quality of life. Travelers can explore with ease, but as always, keep an eye on personal belongings in crowded areas.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

The best time to visit Finland depends on the experience you’re looking for:

  • Spring (April–June): Milder weather (40–60°F / 5–15°C), fewer tourists, and beautiful blooming landscapes.
  • Summer (June–August): Enjoy the famous Midnight Sun, warm temperatures (65–75°F / 18–24°C), and vibrant festivals. Great for hiking, island hopping, and outdoor adventures.
  • Autumn (September–October): Experience colorful fall foliage and fewer crowds while enjoying cool but pleasant weather.
  • Winter (November–March): A magical time to visit for Northern Lights, snow-covered landscapes, and Lapland’s winter activities like husky sledding and ice fishing.
