I almost didn’t book Nicaragua. And looking back, that would have been the biggest travel mistake I’d made in years.

Everyone I told had the same reaction. Is it safe? Why would you go there? And I get it. I had the same questions. But I went anyway, with my husband and three kids in tow, and what we found was one of the most beautiful, uncrowded, genuinely extraordinary places our family has ever been.

Rancho Santana changed how I think about what a family trip can be. Here’s everything you need to know.

GETTING THERE IS EASIER THAN YOU THINK
This was my biggest hesitation and the one that dissolved fastest. Direct flights connect Managua from Miami, Houston and Atlanta. You land, clear customs, pay $10 USD for your visa on arrival, and you are done in minutes. No complications, no stress.

If you want to make it a two-country trip, you can fly into Liberia, Costa Rica instead and drive across the border. A private vehicle from the resort picks you up at the airport either way and delivers you directly to the property. That two-hour drive from Managua, through rolling hills and open landscape, is honestly when the trip starts to feel different. The world gets quieter. You start to decompress before you even arrive.

WHAT IS RANCHO SANTANA, EXACTLY
It is not a traditional resort. That is the first thing to understand and also the best thing about it. Rancho Santana, or the Ranch as everyone calls it, is a private residential community on Nicaragua’s Pacific coast. 2,700 acres. Five completely private beaches stretched across miles of dramatic coastline. No day trippers. No cruise crowds. No one trying to sell you something every ten feet.

Just you, your family, the ocean and a sunset every single night that stops you mid-sentence. Accommodations range from rooms at the intimate 17-room Inn right on the beach, to multi-bedroom condos with full kitchens perfect for families, to private cliffside homes with infinity pools overlooking the Pacific. FIVE BEACHES AND EVERY ONE OF THEM IS DIFFERENT
This is what surprised me most. I expected one great beach. What we got was five completely distinct experiences.

Playa Santana is where the heart of the property sits. The main restaurant, the hotel, the pool. It is your home base and where the sunset horseback rides depart.
Playa Rosada is named for its pink-tinged sand and is the kind of beach you walk along slowly, collecting shells and letting the kids run. La Boquita restaurant is right here, which made long lazy lunches with a Pacific view completely effortless.
Playa Duna requires a little hiking to reach, which makes it feel like a secret. There is a massive sand dune created by coastal winds that the kids absolutely lost their minds over. Sandboarding is complimentary and wildly fun.
Playa Escondida is the hidden beach, and some days you genuinely have it to yourself. Sea turtles nest here. There is a yoga platform on the shore. It is the kind of place you go when you need to hear yourself think.
Playa Los Perros is where families with kids need to spend most of their beach time. White sand, gentle waves, a surf shop with boards and instructors, and La Taquería right there when everyone gets hungry. This is where we started our surf lessons and where the kids spent hours in the water every single day.

WE ALL LEARNED TO SURF
My kids and I took beginner lessons at Playa Los Perros and then moved on to Beginners Bay as we got more confident. I want to be honest: I was not a natural. But the instructors are ISA-certified, patient and genuinely good at what they do, and by the end of our time there every one of my kids was standing up and riding waves on their own.

Watching that happen, on a completely empty beach in Nicaragua, is one of those travel moments I will carry for a long time.

For families where some members are more experienced surfers, the property has you covered too. The Surf Butler program pairs you with a dedicated guide who builds a personalized plan around your ability level, provides daily surf reports, arranges private transportation to the best breaks and even includes a boat charter to explore waves up and down the coast. It is the kind of service that makes serious surfers feel like they have a local in their corner.

THE SPA IS SOMETHING ELSE
One afternoon while the kids were at the Kids Club, my husband and I went to the Spa en el Bosque. The forest spa. That name is not marketing. The treatment casitas are set into the hillside, surrounded by jungle, with private cold plunge and hot tub rooms to use before and after your treatment.

I have been to a lot of spas. This one was different. Something about being completely inside nature rather than adjacent to it changes the experience entirely. We came out of there feeling genuinely restored in a way that a hotel spa in a marble corridor has never quite managed.

THE FOOD WILL SURPRISE YOU
I did not expect the dining to be a highlight. It absolutely was.

The Ranch grows much of its own produce, which you understand properly after doing the vegetable garden tour with the kids. What comes out of that garden ends up on the menus, and you can taste the difference.

La Finca y El Mar in the main Clubhouse is the flagship, with a menu that draws on Nicaraguan ingredients and flavors while feeling genuinely refined. La Boquita at Playa Rosada does sunset sushi and wood-fired pizza overlooking the water, and it is the kind of dinner where you lose track of time. La Taquería at Playa Los Perros is beachside and casual and serves the best post-surf tacos I have ever eaten. El Café at the Inn became our morning ritual, coffee and pastries before the kids were fully awake. And the Pool Bar handled every midday need exactly right. You can also arrange to have meals prepared by the resort’s culinary team and delivered to your villa. We did this one night and it was one of the best decisions we made.

THE HORSEBACK RIDE AT SUNSET
I have to talk about this separately because it deserves its own moment. We rode through the jungle and then out onto the beach as the sun was going down. The sky
turned colors I could not have predicted. The kids were quiet in a way they almost never are. My husband looked at me and said what we were both thinking: this is one of the best things we have ever done.

Book it. Do not skip it.

A NOTE ON THE DESTINATION
Nicaragua is not on most families’ shortlists yet. That is precisely why it should be on yours.

The country is welcoming, the people are warm, and the Emerald Coast around Rancho Santana feels genuinely undiscovered in the best possible way. There are no crowds here. No lines. No feeling that you are just moving through a well-worn tourist circuit. The Ranch also takes its relationship with the local community seriously. Organic farming, conservation projects and deep local employment mean that when you spend money here, it stays here and does something good.
