Turkey

What can I expect from Turkey?

Turkey is a country of stunning contrasts, where East meets West and ancient history blends seamlessly with modern life. Expect to be captivated by its diverse landscapes, from the vibrant cityscapes of Istanbul and the stunning ruins of Ephesus to the unique rock formations of Cappadocia and the beautiful beaches of Antalya. Turkey’s rich cultural heritage, flavorful cuisine, and warm hospitality create a travel experience that is both enriching and unforgettable.

How to Get There

From the US, you can fly direct to major Turkish cities such as Istanbul (IST) and Ankara (ESB) on airlines like Turkish Airlines, Delta, and American Airlines from hubs such as New York (JFK), Los Angeles (LAX), and Chicago (ORD).

Currency: The local currency of Turkey is the Turkish Lira (TRY). The US dollar is not widely accepted, so it’s best to use local currency. 1 US dollar is approximately equivalent to 27.40 TRY.

Language: Turkish is the official language of Turkey. English is commonly spoken in major tourist areas and cities, but learning a few basic Turkish phrases can be helpful.

Credit Cards & ATMs: Credit cards are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants, and shops. It’s advisable to carry some cash for smaller purchases. ATMs are readily available throughout the country.

Plugs: The standard voltage is 230 V, and the frequency is 50 Hz. Turkey uses Type C and F plugs, so bring a universal adapter if needed.

Safety: Turkey is generally safe for tourists, though it’s wise to stay aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Petty crime, such as pickpocketing, can occur in tourist hotspots.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

Turkey is a year-round destination. The best time to visit is during spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) when the weather is mild and pleasant. Summer can be hot, particularly in inland areas, while winter is ideal for skiing in the Eastern Anatolia region.
