Sri Lanka

What can I expect from Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka is a vibrant island nation known for its rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and diverse wildlife. Expect to explore ancient temples, lush tea plantations, and pristine beaches, as well as experience the warmth of Sri Lankan hospitality. With a mix of historical sites, scenic beauty, and opportunities for adventure, including safaris in national parks and surfing on the coast, Sri Lanka offers a well-rounded travel experience that caters to both relaxation and exploration.

How to Get There

From the US, you can fly to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Colombo with airlines like SriLankan Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Emirates, often with connections through hubs like Doha, Dubai, or Bangkok.

Currency: The local currency of Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). The US dollar is not widely accepted, so it’s best to use local currency. 1 US dollar is approximately equivalent to 328.15 LKR.

Language: Sinhala and Tamil are the official languages. English is widely spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants.

Credit Cards & ATMs: Credit cards are accepted in major cities, hotels, and tourist areas. Carry some cash for smaller purchases and transactions in rural areas. ATMs are available in cities and major towns.

Plugs: The standard voltage is 230 V, and the frequency is 50 Hz. Sri Lanka uses Type D and G plugs, so a universal adapter may be needed.

Safety: Sri Lanka is generally safe for tourists, with low crime rates. It’s still wise to stay aware of your surroundings, follow local advice, and be cautious during your travels, especially in areas affected by recent events.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

The best time to visit Sri Lanka depends on the region. The dry season from December to March is ideal for visiting the western and southern coasts, while the cultural cities in the central region are best visited during the dry season from April to September. The northeastern coast experiences its dry season from May to September.
