Dublin: The Merrion (2 Nights)—A Grand Introduction to Ireland
Our adventure began in Dublin, a city where history and modern energy collide. For a luxurious yet family-friendly stay, The Merrion was the perfect choice. Located in the heart of the city, this elegant hotel offers spacious suites and interconnecting rooms—ideal for families who want to stay together in style.
Set within four beautifully restored Georgian townhouses, The Merrion is the epitome of understated luxury. The hotel features one of Ireland’s most impressive private art collections, a tranquil courtyard garden and a world-class spa and pool—a perfect place to unwind after a day of sightseeing. Its Michelin-starred restaurant, Patrick Guilbaud, is an excellent option for parents seeking a fine-dining experience, while the cozy Cellar Bar offers a relaxed setting for families.
Family-Friendly Highlights:
• EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum – This interactive museum captivated our kids with hands-on exhibits that brought Ireland’s global influence to life.
• Trinity College & The Book of Kells – The Long Room Library felt like something out of Harry Potter, and the illuminated Book of Kells fascinated us all.
• Johnnie Fox’s Hooley Night – No visit to Ireland is complete without a rollicking night of music, dance, and storytelling, and Johnnie Fox’s delivered in spades.
Castlemartyr Resort (2 Nights)—Legends & Luxury in the Countryside
On our way to Castlemartyr Resort, we stopped at the Rock of Cashel, one of Ireland’s most breathtaking historical sites. Wandering among the medieval ruins, we could almost hear the whispers of ancient Irish kings.
Nestled on 220 acres of parkland, Castlemartyr blends the grandeur of a 17th-century manor with the modern luxuries of a five-star retreat. Families will love the spacious accommodations, beautiful grounds and variety of activities. The resort also boasts an 18-hole golf course, a world-class spa and a stunning lake, making it a serene escape for families looking to balance adventure with relaxation.
One of the highlights of our stay at Castlemartyr was dining at Terre, the resort’s Michelin-starred restaurant. The immersive fine-dining experience took us on a culinary journey through Ireland’s finest ingredients, with a menu that felt like a work of art. The impeccable service, intimate setting, and creative tasting courses made it one of the most memorable dining experiences of our trip—a must for food-lovers. Plus, it makes for a unique date night for parents, while the kids enjoyed the hotel’s kids club.
Adventurous Explorations:
• Blarney Castle & Gardens – Kissing the Blarney Stone for the “gift of gab” was a thrill, but the real gem was the enchanted gardens, filled with secret caves and fairy-tale paths.
• Spike Island – This former prison-turned-historical attraction felt like a real-life adventure, complete with eerie tunnels and gripping stories of Ireland’s past.

Kenmare: Sheen Falls Lodge (2 Nights)—A Fairytale Wilderness Escape
Arriving at Sheen Falls Lodge felt like stepping into a postcard-perfect Irish dream. Our family stayed in Little Hay Cottage, a private retreat with all the perks of a five-star hotel—a perfect choice for those who want extra space and seclusion.
Set along the banks of the Sheen River, this five-star Relais & Châteaux property offers families a unique combination of elegance and wilderness adventure. The lodge is home to a variety of outdoor activities, including fishing, clay pigeon shooting and scenic boat tours. The onsite spa and indoor heated pool make it a perfect retreat for parents looking for relaxation while kids explore the great outdoors.
Unforgettable Outdoor Adventures:
• Horseback Riding – There’s something magical about riding through Ireland’s rolling green hills and our kids absolutely loved their first equestrian experience.
• Exploring Kenmare – This charming town, with its colorful streets and artisan shops, was a delight to explore.
• Falconry Experience – Holding and flying a majestic bird of prey was an experience our family will never forget.

Dromoland Castle (2 Nights)—Living the Castle Fantasy
If Sheen Falls was a nature retreat, Dromoland Castle was a full-blown royal experience. This historic 16th-century castle, complete with turrets and grand staircases, made us feel like we had stepped into a storybook.
Dromoland is one of Ireland’s most famous castle hotels, known for its impeccable service, lavish interiors, and extensive grounds. Families can enjoy activities such as archery, boating, and cycling, while the elegant spa and golf course provide extra indulgence.
Activities Fit for Royalty:
• Falconry on the Castle Grounds – Learning to fly hawks was just as thrilling here as it was at Sheen Falls, but with the dramatic castle backdrop, it felt even more cinematic.
• Sheepdog Demonstration at Caherconnell Fort – Watching border collies expertly herd sheep with just a whistle and a nod was fascinating for both kids and adults.
• Cliffs of Moher – These iconic cliffs were even more breathtaking in person. We lucked out with clear skies, making for an unforgettable coastal walk.
• Dinner at Earl of Thomond – A true fine-dining experience in a regal setting—an elegant way to wrap up our castle stay.
Ballynahinch Castle (2 Nights)—A Hidden Gem in Connemara
Tucked away in Connemara’s wild beauty, Ballynahinch Castle is a haven for families seeking peace, adventure and natural splendor.
Unlike the grand opulence of Dromoland, Ballynahinch offers understated luxury with a focus on nature and outdoor pursuits. The 700-acre estate features walking trails, fishing along the Owenmore River and cozy fireplaces perfect for relaxing after a day outdoors.
Outdoor Highlights:
• Nature Walks – The estate’s winding trails led us through forests, along rivers, and past charming stone bridges—perfect for a leisurely family stroll.
• Fishing (Seasonal) – Though we visited in the off-season, families traveling in summer can experience some of Ireland’s best fly fishing.
Dublin: Clontarf Castle (1 Night)—A Regal Sendoff
Our journey came full circle with one last night in Dublin at Clontarf Castle, a boutique property that blends medieval charm with contemporary comfort.
Final Memories:
• Dinner at Knights Bar – We didn’t have much time here, but Knights Bar provided a cozy and memorable farewell meal.
