What can I expect from Vietnam?

Vietnam is a dynamic country brimming with cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and vibrant street life. Expect to experience a fascinating blend of ancient traditions and modern energy, from exploring the historic streets of Hanoi to cruising the breathtaking Halong Bay. With its diverse landscapes, ranging from lush rice terraces and bustling cities to serene beaches, Vietnam offers a range of experiences including rich culinary delights, historical sites, and natural beauty.

How to Get There

From the US, you can fly to major Vietnamese airports such as Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) in Ho Chi Minh City and Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) in Hanoi with airlines like Vietnam Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and Korean Air, often with connections through hubs like Seoul, Bangkok, or Hong Kong.

Currency: The local currency of Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong (VND). The US dollar is not widely accepted, so it’s best to use local currency. 1 US dollar is approximately equivalent to 24,074 VND.

Language: Vietnamese is the official language. English is increasingly spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and major cities, but learning a few basic phrases can be helpful.

Credit Cards & ATMs: Credit cards are widely accepted in major cities, hotels, and restaurants. Carry some cash for smaller purchases and transactions in rural areas. ATMs are available in cities and tourist locations.

Plugs: The standard voltage is 220 V, and the frequency is 50 Hz. Vietnam uses Type A, C, and D plugs, so a universal adapter may be needed.

Safety: Vietnam is generally safe for tourists, but it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings and be cautious of petty theft, especially in crowded areas. Follow local advice and use common sense to ensure a safe trip.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

The best time to visit Vietnam varies by region. The north (Hanoi, Halong Bay) is best visited from October to April when the weather is cooler and drier. The central region (Hue, Hoi An) is best visited from February to April for pleasant weather. The south (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta) is ideal from December to April when it’s dry and warm.
