The Maldives

What can I expect from the Maldives?

The Maldives is a tropical paradise renowned for its stunning white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and luxurious overwater bungalows. Expect to experience unparalleled relaxation and natural beauty, with opportunities for snorkeling, diving, and exploring vibrant marine life. The Maldives offers a serene escape with its lush islands, world-class resorts, and vibrant coral reefs, making it an ideal destination for romantic getaways, honeymooners, and anyone seeking a peaceful retreat in an idyllic setting.

How to Get There

From the US, you can fly to Malé International Airport (MLE), the main gateway to the Maldives, with airlines like Qatar Airways, Emirates, and Turkish Airlines, often with connections through hubs like Doha, Dubai, or Istanbul. Many resorts also offer seaplane or speedboat transfers from Malé to their private islands.

Currency: The local currency of the Maldives is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR). The US dollar is widely accepted in resorts and tourist areas. 1 US dollar is approximately equivalent to 15.42 MVR.

Language: Dhivehi is the official language. English is widely spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and resorts.

Credit Cards & ATMs: Credit cards are widely accepted at most resorts and hotels. Carry some cash for smaller purchases in local islands. ATMs are available in Malé, but less common on remote islands.

Plugs: The standard voltage is 230 V, and the frequency is 50 Hz. The Maldives uses Type G plugs, so a universal adapter may be needed.

Safety: The Maldives is generally safe for tourists, with low crime rates. However, it’s wise to follow local advice, respect local customs, and be cautious of strong currents when swimming.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

The best time to visit the Maldives is during the dry season from November to April, when the weather is sunny, with minimal rainfall and ideal conditions for beach activities and water sports. The wet season runs from May to October, bringing higher humidity and occasional rain showers, but also fewer tourists and lower prices.
