Hungary

What can I expect from Hungary?

Hungary is a stunning destination known for its rich history, thermal baths, and vibrant culture. At its heart lies Budapest, the “Pearl of the Danube,” where grand architecture, scenic river views, and a thriving café culture create an unforgettable atmosphere. Beyond the capital, explore the historic town of Eger, the beautiful vineyards of Tokaj, or the relaxing shores of Lake Balaton. Whether you’re soaking in a thermal bath, enjoying a traditional goulash, or cruising along the Danube at sunset, Hungary offers a perfect mix of history, relaxation, and adventure.

How to Get There

From the US, direct flights to Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) are available from major cities like New York and Chicago via airlines such as Delta, Lufthansa, and British Airways (with layovers in Europe). Hungary is also well connected by train and bus from neighboring European countries, including Austria, Slovakia, and Romania.

Currency

The local currency is the Hungarian forint (HUF). Credit cards are widely accepted in cities and tourist areas, but carrying some cash is useful, especially in smaller towns. 1 US dollar is approximately equivalent to 350 HUF.

Language

Hungarian is the official language, and while English is commonly spoken in Budapest and tourist areas, learning a few Hungarian phrases like “Szia” (Hello) or “Köszönöm” (Thank you) can enhance your experience!

Credit Cards & ATMs

Most restaurants, hotels, and shops accept credit cards. ATMs are widely available and provide an easy way to withdraw local currency.

Plugs

Hungary uses Type C and Type F plugs, with a standard voltage of 230V and a frequency of 50Hz. Travelers from the US and UK may need a universal adapter.

Safety

Hungary is generally very safe for travelers, with low crime rates and a welcoming atmosphere. As in any major city, be mindful of pickpockets in crowded areas, particularly in tourist hotspots like Budapest’s ruin bars and public transport.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

The best time to visit Hungary is from April to October, when the weather is pleasant and ideal for exploring.

  • Spring (April–June): Enjoy mild temperatures (55–75°F / 13–24°C), blooming flowers, and fewer tourists.
  • Summer (July–August): The warmest months (75–90°F / 24–32°C), perfect for enjoying outdoor cafés, festivals, and Lake Balaton. Expect more tourists.
  • Autumn (September–October): Cooler weather, vibrant fall colors, and fewer crowds make this a great time to visit.
  • Winter (November–March): Cold but magical, with Christmas markets, thermal baths, and snow-covered castles creating a festive atmosphere.
