Austria

What can I expect from Austria?

Austria is a country of stunning Alpine landscapes, grand imperial cities, and a rich cultural heritage. From the elegant streets of Vienna, where classical music and historic palaces reign, to the breathtaking lakes and mountains of Salzkammergut, Austria offers a perfect mix of urban sophistication and natural beauty. Whether you’re skiing in the Alps, exploring fairytale-like castles, or indulging in world-famous pastries like Sachertorte, Austria promises an unforgettable experience steeped in history, culture, and adventure.

How to Get There

From the US, direct flights to Vienna International Airport (VIE) are available from major cities like New York, Chicago, and Washington, D.C., via airlines like Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, and United. Travelers from Europe can easily reach Austria by train or bus, with excellent connections from Germany, Switzerland, and Italy.

Currency

The local currency is the Euro (EUR). Credit cards are widely accepted in cities and tourist areas, but it’s always a good idea to have some cash, especially in rural regions and smaller establishments. 1 US dollar is approximately equivalent to 0.90 EUR.

Language

The official language is German, but English is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas. Learning a few basic German phrases like “Guten Tag” (Good day) or “Danke” (Thank you) can enhance your experience!

Credit Cards & ATMs

Most restaurants, hotels, and shops accept credit cards, but some smaller businesses may prefer cash. ATMs are widely available across the country.

Plugs

Austria uses Type C and Type F plugs, with a standard voltage of 230V and a frequency of 50Hz. Travelers from the US and UK may need a universal adapter.

Safety

Austria is considered one of the safest countries in Europe, with low crime rates and a welcoming atmosphere. As always, be mindful of pickpockets in crowded tourist areas.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

The best time to visit Austria depends on your interests:

  • Spring (April–June): Enjoy pleasant temperatures (50–70°F / 10–21°C), blooming gardens, and fewer tourists.
  • Summer (July–August): Warm weather (70–85°F / 21–29°C), perfect for hiking in the Alps and exploring Austria’s picturesque lakes. Expect more crowds, especially in Vienna and Salzburg.
  • Autumn (September–October): Beautiful fall foliage, fewer tourists, and comfortable weather make this a great time to visit. It’s also wine season!
  • Winter (November–March): Austria transforms into a winter wonderland with world-class skiing in Tyrol and Salzburg, magical Christmas markets, and cozy alpine villages.
