When planning family travel, we often dream of the perfect getaway that strikes a balance between adventure and relaxation, education and entertainment, comfort and the call of the wild. My recent 10-day tour of Botswana with Sanctuary Retreats was a testament to the fact that such a balance isn’t just a dream—it’s a spectacular reality.

With my husband and our three children in tow, we embarked on an African adventure that promised to be both enlightening and exhilarating. Our journey took us through three of Sanctuary Retreats’ premier lodges: Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero, Stanley’s Camp and Chief’s Camp. Here, we discovered the heart of Botswana’s wilderness, a land teeming with life and ripe with the wonders of nature.

Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero: The Elephant’s Embrace

Our journey began at Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero, a luxurious, serene lodge nestled on the edge of Chobe National Park. Known for its elephant population, Chobe provided the perfect introduction to Africa’s wildlife. From the comfort of the lodge’s elevated position, we watched herds of elephants meander by, a sight that left our little ones in awe.

Chobe Chilwero is a haven of tranquility. You will appreciate the spacious cottages, ideal for family stays, not to mention the split-level pool that offers respite after a day of exploration. The rooms are equipped with modern amenities, comfortable furnishings and private terraces offering breathtaking views of the surrounding bush and river. We enjoyed watching our daily visitors—playful mongeese, naughty baboons and peaceful bushbuck— from the comfort of our terrace. Can’t forget the river cruises, a tranquil yet thrilling wildlife viewing, where you’ll find yourselves meters away from hippos and crocodiles, all in the safety of experienced guides.

Stanley’s Camp: Stepping into the Wild

Next on our itinerary was Stanley’s Camp, set amidst the floodplains of the Okavango Delta. Here, the true essence of the wild was palpable. Our family was greeted by the sounds of nature, a symphony of birdsong and the rustling of the wind through the reeds.

The camp’s traditional safari tents boasted the rustic charm of a bygone era, yet provided all the modern comforts we could wish for. The children were enchanted by the natural surroundings and the camp’s resident wildlife, including a young male leopard who can often be seen near the camp. Although not available in the summertime when we visited, the lodge offers mokoro (dugout canoe) trips, a safe yet adventurous activity that is sure to instill a deep appreciation of the environment. For this, and other activities where you might want to experience the Delta during its famous flood season, make sure you book your travels June to August.

Our days at Stanleys Camp were filled with exhilarating game drives in search of elusive predators. Each day brought new adventures and discoveries, leaving us in awe of the natural wonders that surrounded us. Perhaps the most unforgettable experience at Stanley’s Camp was the opportunity to enjoy sundowners by the watering holes, where guests can witness the fascinating interactions between hippos and crocodiles in their natural habitat. As the sun sets over the African bush, guests can relax with a refreshing drink in hand, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the Okavango Delta, creating a truly unforgettable safari experience.

Chief’s Camp: Royal Treatment in the Wild

Our final stop was the prestigious Chief’s Camp, located on Chief’s Island in the Moremi Game Reserve. Known for its exclusivity and luxury, Chief’s Camp was the crown jewel of our Botswana adventure. The camp’s refined accommodations were a welcome treat after our days spent exploring the wild.

Our game drives in Moremi were nothing short of spectacular. The children’s excitement was palpable as we spotted lions, leopards and buffalo. Our knowledgeable guide made each drive an educational experience, teaching us about the complex ecosystems and the importance of conservation.

At Chief’s Camp, the family-friendly atmosphere extended to the dining experiences, where our meals were not only delicious but also tailored to accommodate the palates of our young adventurers. The chefs went above and beyond, preparing dishes that captured the essence of Botswana’s cuisine while ensuring they were approachable for the children.

As we gathered around the campfire under the African sky, we shared stories of the day’s sightings. The staff at Chief’s Camp, with their warm hospitality and attention to detail, made sure that every aspect of our stay was comfortable, safe, and imbued with the magic of the African bush.

Educational Insights and Conservation Efforts

Throughout our Botswana journey, one aspect consistently stood out: The commitment to education and conservation by Sanctuary Retreats. Each lodge provided invaluable insights into the importance of preserving these pristine environments and their inhabitants. Our guides were not just experts in tracking and spotting wildlife; they were passionate educators, eager to share their knowledge, especially with the children, who absorbed every word and returned home as budding conservationists.

The lessons of responsible tourism and the ethos of eco-friendly practices were evident in the operations of each lodge. Sanctuary Retreats’ dedication to sustainability taught us all to be more mindful travelers and global citizens. Our family left Botswana with a renewed commitment to protecting our planet and its treasures.
